Advantage System of Scoring
Trials, using this new method of scoring, have been carried out and refined during the last few years, under the control of the Croquet Association and it seems that it is now to be adopted as the standard for competitive handicap GC. As a result of this, the North West Federation has decided that all their hcp. GC leagues will use the Advantage system of scoring starting this season and it will also be adopted for the Snowdonia Cup competition. Briefly, the main difference between this new method of scoring and what we have been used to is that instead of the higher handicap player receiving a number of extra turns, (depending on the difference in handicaps), each player is given a starting score, where, to win, the higher handicapper may only need to run 5 hoops whereas the lower handicapper could start with a negative score and may have to run 9 hoops to win. The starting scores, which depend on the difference between the handicaps of the players, are given on a set of standard tables. To familiarise ourselves with the Advantage system I hope we can arrange a few sessions to discuss this with everyone once we can get back onto the lawns. David Boyd February 2023 |
